In the UK many people may not now this information but it is essential for anyone working as a doorman to have the correct license, the Security Industry Authority license. There are also certain courses that the employer of a doorman can send them on for further training it is when they are slightly more experienced that the companies tend to send them on further training so they can become supervisors or managers of the rest of the door staff. Here are some examples of courses and training that the staff can take and the employers can send staff on;
- SIA license - This is an official qualification that they must take before even becoming a doorman. There are a wide range of companies offering the test and training but they must be approved by the SIA or it will not be valid on completion. If you do work as a doorman and do not have a licence if you are caught you could end up with a fine of up to £5000 or up to 6 months in prison in some cases you could get punished with both. Bearing in mind it costs around £200 to get a license it isn't worth the risk of being caught with out, a lot of the time the company the doorman works for will pay for them to get a license if they don't have one to begin with. This SIA training involves learning more about the law surrounding door supervision, licensing requirements, health and safety, dealing with customers and when you have the power to search them, controlling entrance to the building and also how to deal with an emergency such as fire procedures. Once they have had this training there is an exam that they must pass before being granted their
- Extra training - There are courses such as the Level 2 National Certificate in Door supervising. This training will incorporate two section one being the roles and responsibilities of a door supervisor and then the second being communication skills and how to deal with conflict. After this course the person will be awarded with the door supervisory license which must then be renewed every 3 years, this helps them keep up to date with the ever changing licensing laws and health and safety issues.
- Once all training is complete and the person has their license it is possible for them to then work for any company as some companies require that you have it before starting to work for them where as others pay for you to get it. You could either work as an in house door supervisor or you can also work for an agency which means you could work in various locations every time you go to work. If you work in house then you will be more likely to work only at the busiest times which would be weekends and evenings in most cases.
