When it comes to security many people think straight away about products to stop intruders getting on to their property, but how many people think about security against fire. Accidental fires in homes account for around 80% of all fires that kill, so it's safe to say that many more people need to think about fire security as a major part of the systems they have installed. As well as all the products available for preventing or stopping fires there are also simple steps you can follow in your everyday life to prevent a fire from breaking out to begin with.
- Fire blankets - These are mainly used in industrial situations such as working kitchens, schools and office canteens. However, products such as these are becoming more popular with people for use in their own kitchens at home because of how effective they are. These are mandatory in places such as multi tenancy housing where the land lord will be required by law to provide these blankets in high risk sections of the housing. They come in different sizes and thicknesses dependent on the size and type of fire they are intended to extinguish.
- Prevention - As stated above a large percentage of fires in homes are started by accident so this is why it's important for you to understand what kind of things you should be doing to prevent a fire from being started. There are simple steps you can follow to prevent things like electrical fires;
- Ensure that all electrical products have the correct fuse in them, this is broken down into two types either a 3 amp fuse should be used for equipment running off up to 720 watts and for anything that runs off over 720 watts should have a 13 amp fuse installed.
- Avoid using multi way adaptors where ever possible and never run an extension lead underneath a carpet because if there is any damage done to the wire you won't be able to see it.
- When going to bed at night or especially when going away on holiday make sure you switch off all plugs and unplug any appliances that need not be plugged in constantly like fridges or videos.
- Fire extinguishers - These are found mainly in industrial settings rather than the home, unless it is required for the land lord to provide them for example in a multi tenancy situation. They are available with foam, carbon dioxide or water, they are all effective but each one is more suitable for a different kind of fire for example you couldn't use a water fire extinguisher on an electrical fire as that would be extremely dangerous.
- There are also short courses you can take that teach you about different areas of fire safety from the products that stop fires to what you should do in the first place to prevent fires from starting. Taking these courses is becoming increasing popular not only with those protecting their business but also with people that want to learn how to protect their home against fire.
